Here're a bunch of resources from the only national organization I'm still a member of, Co-op America (http://www.coopamerica.org ). I've stuck with them because their focus is on proactively working to create alternatives rather than reactively working to stop the harm that's being done by the current system:

  • The National Green Pages, a sort of ecologically-minded Yellow Pages http://www.greenpages.org .
  • Responsible Shopper, an effort to hold corporations accountable for their practices by giving shoppers the info they need to shift their purchases from less responsible to more responsible companies: http://www.responsibleshopper.org .
  • Their Woodwise Consumer Guide, offering information about how to use wood and the things made from wood more wisely--which often means simply using less: http://www.woodwise.org .
  • Co-op America 's bimonthly newsletter, Real Money , offering "practical tips to help people save, spend, and invest their money in harmony with their values": http://www.realmoney.org .
  • Want to deposit your money with banks that invest in projects which build, rather than undermine, community? Check out the Social Investment Forum Foundation and Co-op America 's Guide to Investing in Community: http://www.communityinvest.org/ .
  • Want to invest your assets in companies whose values closely align with your own? Find more info on doing so at: http://www.socialinvest.org .
  • Want to use the power you wield as a shareholder to achieve positive change? Check out this website, a joint project of Co-op America and the Social Investment Forum: http://www.shareholderaction.org .
  • Want to learn about how to green your current energy use and/or switch to renewable energy for your home or business? Check out Co-op America 's Green Energy program at http://www.coopamerica.org/programs/greenenergy/ .
  • Want to help bring the price of solar photovoltaic cells down to the affordable range? Check out http://www.solarcatalyst.com .
  • Are you a coffee drinker (unlike me)? I highly recommend you look into the benefits of Fair Trade Certified Coffee, for the sake of the farmers who grow the beans. Co-op America has a new site providing info on the benefits of such coffee, and you can even buy through the site if the coffee isn't available where you live: http://www.fairtradeaction.org .
