Rally to Protest Holcomb Coal Plant
at Gov Sebelius' Office
We hope you can make it to Topeka for the rally at Gov. Sebelius' office.
If the Governor doesn't stop it - Kansas will have 3 new coal-burning
power plants in Holcomb - the largest new source of global warming gas in
the nation.

Show Public OPPOSITION to Proposed Coal-Fired Power Plants, and SUPPORT
for Renewable Energy Alternatives
Topeka, Kan. - Numerous area grass-roots organizations are joining
forces to host a rally on the steps of the Capitol Building this Saturday,
December 2nd beginning at 11 a.m. The purpose of the rally is to ask
Governor Sebelius to place a moratorium on new coal-fired power plants in
Kansas and to increase use of renewable energy instead. There is an air
permit pending with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE)
for Sunflower Electric to build three new coal-fired power plants in
Holcomb, Kansas.
We are encouraged by Sebelius' recent statements that she recognizes
Kansas' outstanding potential to produce renewable energy. We ask the
Governor to stop new coal plant construction and take steps to move
Kansas forward without endangering the health of Kansans and further
increasing global warming.
The proposed plants would increase mercury emissions in Kansas by 60% and
be the largest new source of greenhouse gases in the U.S. Kansans will
get the air pollution, while 92% of the electricity generated will go to
Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico.
Supporters of the coal-fired power plants say they will create jobs. But
an equivalent amount of wind power would create more permanent quality
jobs than the proposed plants. Most of the long-term jobs from the coal
plants would occur where the coal is mined--not in Kansas. By contrast,
wind development allows dollars and jobs to stay in Kansas.
KDHE recently held a series of public hearings on the three proposed
Sunflower Electric power plants to be built in Holcomb, KS. At the last
hearing on November 16th, several hundred people showed up,
overwhelmingly against the plant construction.
Groups working together to host the rally include The Sierra Club, True
Blue Women, The Sustainable Sanctuary Coalition, Kansas Natural Resources
Council, the University of Kansas Environs and Concerned Citizens of
Platte County. Mike Murphy from public radio KKFI 90.1 F.M. will be the
emcee.
